Trypanosomes of non-human primates from the National Centre of Primates, Ananindeua, State of Pará, brazil.
Trypanosome infections were sought in 46 non-human primates captured principally in Amazonian Brazil. Twenty-two (47.8%) were infected with four Trypanosoma species: T. cruzi, T. minasense, T. devei and T. rangeli. These preliminary results confirmed the high prevalence and diversity of natural infections with trypanosomes in primates from Brazilian Amazon and were the first formal record of si...

متن کاملNaturally acquired picornavirus infections in primates at the Dhaka zoo.
The conditions in densely populated Bangladesh favor picornavirus transmission, resulting in a high rate of infection in the human population. Data suggest that nonhuman primates (NHP) may play a role in the maintenance and transmission of diverse picornaviruses in Bangladesh. At the Dhaka Zoo, multiple NHP species are caged in close proximity. Their proximity to other species and to humans, bo...

متن کاملAlpha-thalassemia (3.7 kb deletion) in a population from the Brazilian Amazon region: Santarém, Pará State.
The ethnic composition of the Brazilian population favors high frequencies of the -alpha3.7 deletion, responsible for alpha-thalassemia, because this mutation is very common in African populations. In spite of its importance, this hemoglobinopathy has been poorly investigated in Brazil, especially at the molecular level. We investigated the prevalence of the -alpha3.7 mutation in 220 individual...
